Sandro Tonali caught up in illegal betting scandal once again

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali finds himself at the center of a fresh investigation into illegal gambling activities. Tonali, previously suspended for 10 months for breaching betting regulations, is now implicated in a new case that involves 12 other players.

Italian prosecutors launched the investigation after new evidence emerged during the analysis of electronic devices belonging to Tonali and his Fiorentina colleague Nicolo Fagioli. The case involves bets on poker and non-football-related sports events through prohibited platforms.

Milan’s prosecution has arrested five individuals on suspicion of illegal activities and money laundering, though none of the arrested are footballers. Investigators have seized £1.3 million believed to be linked to the criminal scheme.

Tonali previously admitted to breaching betting rules by wagering over €100,000 on Newcastle’s victory. He received a suspended sentence and a fine of £17,380, along with an offer for treatment for gambling addiction.

After returning to the field in August 2024, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed that the club actively supported Tonali during this challenging period.

This season, Tonali has scored four goals and provided two assists in 37 matches, also becoming part of the team that won the League Cup in March.
