Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim decided to rely on Altay Bayindir as the main goalkeeper in the Premier League match against Newcastle United.
Recall that earlier this week, the Red Devils’ number one, Andre Onana, made two errors in the UEFA Europa League match against Lyon, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
“These are normal things, sometimes you have to push the player to play again or let them disconnect,” United coach Amorim told Sky Sports. “Tomorrow he’ll be in training to prepare for the next one. This was a good time to disconnect.”
When asked to explain how Onana took the news, Amorim said: “He was OK. You don’t need to like [the decision] but you need to understand because I explain every situation. It’s a normal situation. We have to manage everything, the mental aspect is really important and it’s just one game.”
Before the game, insiders reported that Onana was experiencing mental health issues. This was one of the reasons the coaching staff decided to give him a break over the weekend.
Meanwhile, insider David Ornstein reported today that the goalkeeper recently changed agents. This was done in anticipation of negotiations with the club for a new contract. However, it’s not ruled out that now the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s representatives may have to find him a new place to work. Earlier, there was information that Saudi Arabia is interested in the goalkeeper’s services.
