Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe received his first red card of his career in Spain during the match against Alaves. In a tough tackle against Antonio Blanco in the first half, the Frenchman was initially shown a yellow card by the referee, but after reviewing the footage, the decision was upgraded to a red card.
According to el Mundo, in the final match report, referee Soto Grado noted that Mbappe received the red card for excessive force in a challenge for the ball. Despite this, Blanco was able to continue the match after the contact with Mbappe. The mention of an attempt to play the ball is expected to be crucial in determining the length of the player’s suspension.
The disciplinary code suggests that for harsh fouls in an attempt to play the ball, players receive suspensions ranging from one to three matches. Had Kylian shown aggressive play without attempting to play the ball, the suspension could have been up to four matches.
A three-match suspension under the rules is not considered a serious offense. Therefore, it will not be extended to all domestic tournaments in which Real Madrid participates.
It is likely that Kylian Mbappe will miss La Liga matches against Athletic Bilbao, Getafe, and Celta. However, in the Copa del Rey final on April 26 and the La Liga match on May 11, where “Los Blancos” will face Barcelona, the Frenchman is expected to be on the field.
It should be noted that Real Madrid currently holds second place in the championship, trailing Barcelona by two points.
